COUCH POTATOES
Obese people sit 2 hours more each day than their lean counterparts. That translates into approximately 350 more calories burned per day by lean individuals. This activity is referred to as non-exercise activity thermogenesis, or NEAT. Patients who claim that they have low metabolism and cannot lose weight despite hardly eating, may simply be individuals with a low NEAT. In a recent study researchers from Louisiana State University were able to quantitate NEAT in a group of couch potatoes with an obese BMI(body mass index), and compare that to NEAT in lean individuals. Interestingly, despite altering the two group’s body weight, their respective NEAT, did not change. This suggested to the researchers that differences in NEAT are biologically determined. They even suggest the involvement of an arousal neuropeptide by the name of orexin, which may be responsible for driving spontaneous activity levels. If you are with natural tendencies towards becoming or already are a couch potato, please be advised that your risk of developing diabetes is markedly increased!

WAIST-TO-TALLNESS RATIO
A group of researchers from Germany has concluded that the ration of waist circumference to tallness is most sensitive in terms of indicating potential obesity-related cardiovascular risk. A cut-off point of 0.53 for women and 0.55 for men is considered high risk. Higher numbers signify a shorter/more obese individual with significantly higher risk for heart attacks-like events. Please calculate your own ratio (using inches for waist and height), and see what you have to lose in waist circumference in order to reduce your risk of heart attack.

INHALED INSULIN APPROVED BY FDA
The FDA’s Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee voted 7 to 2 in favor of recommending the approval of Exubera (inhaled Insulin). Patients will have to undergo baseline pulmonary function testing prior to administration of the drug, due to potential pulmonary complications. In addition, the delivery system is apparently very cumbersome, and will require a very dexterous patient. This preparation is contraindicated in smokers, and will not substitute long-acting insulin. Therefore, patients will need to maintain their long-acting insulin, while using Exubera only before meals. In short, many questions still remain regarding the safety and efficacy of this insulin, and only time will tell if it will be a home-run.

SILVERHAWK PLAQUE EXCISION SYSTEM
A new device approved by FDA which is inserted into the groin of a patient through a catheter, and which has a tiny rotating blade, can shave off an occluding plaque and restore normal circulation in a blocked artery. This gives much hope to patients with sever Peripheral Vascular Disease. Success rate is estimated at 98%, and complications are minimal. Let’s hope that a similar device is currently being invented for use in the coronary (heart) arteries, where it would drastically reduce the rate of heart attacks.

SIDEKICK
This device combines a vial of 50 test strips with a glucose meter built into the cap of the vial. The user removes a test strip from the vial after removing the lid (which is a meter), and after replacing the lid, inserts the strip into the meter and applies a drop of blood. The meter reads the result after 10 seconds. This unit is made by Home Diagnostics, Inc., and can be seen on www.hdidiabetes.com.

OBESITY DRUG TO GO OVER THE COUNTER (OTC)
The British drug manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline is currently seeking FDA approval to sell the drug Xenical , OTC. Xenical is available in its full 120 milligram dose as prescription-only drug approved for treatment of individuals with obesity. Its mechanism of action has to do with blocking fat absorption from inside the intestines into the blood stream. The OTC version will be 60 milligrams only, but with its availability, it may actually hold more promise.
