Diabetes really is not that uncommon. You might have even seen the commercials about it starring Wilford Brimley in between ads for Security Systems Raleigh or the like. Unfortunately, diabetes can sometimes put a real damper on things when it comes to trying to live an ordinary life like everyone else. You always have to keep constant track of what you are eating and you need to test your blood regularly in order to make sure everything is exactly as it should be. It can really be very taxing and nerve racking at times because your life really depends on it, but there are ways you can still enjoy life and keep your diabetes under control. For example, you could exercise more often and this is perfect if your diabetes happens to be of the type 2 variety. For those of you who do not know this, type 2 diabetes is the kind closely linked to being overweight. Type 1 diabetes is the kind that you are born with. With the right amount of exercise, you could really be doing your body a favor regardless of the type because exercising regularly actually helps lower blood sugar levels and increases the insulin sensitivity.

Living with diabetes can be an easy thing to do. That is, if you know how to take care of your diabetes. The number one thing to remember is that you need to keep a check on your blood sugar levels during the day. There are benefits of checking your blood sugar levels on a regular basis.
The first thing a diabetic needs to invest in is a blood sugar monitor. These can be purchased from the doctor’s office or a local pharmacy. This will ensure that you have the ability to check your blood sugar levels. As soon as you get up in the morning, before eating breakfast, the blood sugar level needs to be taken. This will give you the best reading of your blood sugar level. Blood sugar levels are normally at the lowest in the morning. If the blood sugar is very low, then you need to eat something as soon as you can. Throughout the day the blood sugar needs to be monitored. If the blood sugar gets too high, it means you have eaten something that has too much sugar in it. If the blood sugar gets too high or too low, the person can go into diabetic coma or shock. Checking the levels can prevent this.

Diabetes is a condition that affects millions of people each year. There are two types of diabetes:Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 diabetes is caused by a genetic disorder and affects 5 of diabetics. Type 2 diabetes is closely linked to being overweight and affects about 95 of diabetics. Gestational diabetes is the type that can only occur in pregnancy.

If left untreated, diabetes can lead to serious complications and even be deadly. Monitoring one’s blood sugar and working closely with a doctor can help prevent complications. Exercise is also very effective for managing diabetes. Exercise helps diabetics in quite a few ways. Since type 2 diabetes is closely tied to being overweight, losing weight will help a person manage it more effectively. Exercise is one of the most important things that a person can do to lose weight.

People who are diabetic are at risk for heart disease and exercising on a regular basis has been shown to prevent this problem. Exercise also makes it easier for people to manage their diabetes because it lowers blood sugar levels and improves insulin sensitivity. However, there are special concerns for people who have diabetes, so people should make sure that they talk to their doctor before beginning any exercise program.

While type 1 and type 2 diabetes are similar in the fact that they impact the lives of millions of people and require a lifelong commitment to controlling blood sugar, their main difference occurs in what causes each type of diabetes to develop.

Type 1 Diabetes

The primary cause of type 1 diabetes is that the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin, which is a hormone that is necessary for the body to produce energy in the form of glucose, or sugar. This form of diabetes most commonly is diagnosed in individuals before they reach the age of 20, although much like type 2 diabetes, it can arise at any age. Treatment consists of maintaining a healthy blood sugar mostly through insulin injections and eating a healthy diet.

Type 2 Diabetes

In type 2 diabetes, the pancreas does secrete insulin but the amount that it produces is simply not enough for the body to convert to energy, or the cells are not able to use the insulin that is being produced and become resistant to it. In a similar manner to type 1 diabetes, there is no cure for type 2 diabetes, but it can be controlled and managed by maintaining a healthy weight, eating a healthy diet, monitoring blood sugar and, for some individuals, use of insulin injections.

Patients with diabetes are always on the lookout on how to control the disease. Today there are many ways to get your diabetes under control. Many choose medication or lifestyle change. Some may choose a combination of both. It is important to keep your blood glucose under control to prevent further health complications. Let’s review the ways you can control your diabetes.

The main thing to help keep your diabetes under control is by watching your blood pressure. Having your blood pressure under control can prevent eye and kidney damage caused by diabetes. You should maintain a blood pressure of 130/80 or lower. If your blood pressure is high, make sure to visit your physician.

Another great way to gain control of diabetes is by eating a healthy diet. A vegetarian diet is best for those suffering from diabetes. Eating more vegetables will reduce the need for insulin. Try to eat a diet high in whole grains, fruits, vegetables and nuts. Drinking more water will also help control diabetes.

Exercise is also a great way to control your diabetes. Exercise can lower weight and help many people lower their doses of medications. Exercise can also lower the complications of diabetes.
